True story told by a Missouri attorney, who recently had her wallet stolen while in another state.
For her trip to Colorado she placed all her credit cards, driver's license, plane ticket, and cash inside a wallet, which she placed inside a fastened shoulder strap purse. In spite of generally not travelling with all that in one place she went to her meeting assuming she would not be the victim of a crime. When she reached inside the purse for her wallet after having it out about two hours earlier she noted it was missing. Retracing her steps and looking everywhere she had been was fruitless so a police complaint was made, which proved vital to being able to fly back to Missouri.
The motel attempted to help by asking their own bank to accept a wire transfer of funds to her in spite of the fact she did not have any identification. The bank refused because they did not know her and she did not have an account with them. Some seven-eight hours after the discovery of the missing wallet and no food, etc. the motel then permitted funds to be wired to their own account and let her have some cash. Her husband had the Mo. Department of Revenue fax a copy of her digital photo and full driver's license and the airline said they would accept it for the flight back. However, once she reached the airport she had all her luggage extensively searched and had to go through very close and extended scrutiny before she could board a plane to Kansas City. Once she reached Kansas City a snow storm had made travelling on home dangerous and she had to decide if she still had enough of the cash to both stay overnight at motel and have gas for her car for the trip home still without no driver's license or identification.
Tips to avoid a similar experience:
1. Copy all of your credit cards and identification and keep them in distinctly separate places. Have a color copy or two of your photo identifications.
2. Never take more than one or two credit cards on any one trip.
3. Have more than one form of photo identification along for all trips, including having your passport even for domestic travels. But, keep them in separate locations and consider filing at least one with the motel for placement in a safe, locker.
4. Use traveller's checks and money orders versus cash, because they can be replaced, but still keep them in separate locations.
5. Carry some items in a security belt worn inside your clothing and available via some airports and airlines.
6. Beware that medications are also an item that are high profile for theft. Take extra security measures to protect your medications.
7. When travelling by car in winter weather have appropriate safety items such as a blanket, survival blanket, candles, matches sealed in wax inside a bottle and/or lighter inside a water proof container, canned heat, candy, water, flare, sand or kitty litter, de icer, gloves, hat, face mask, socks, shovel, flashlight, cell phone, electrical or duct tape, medications, etc.
8. When travelling by car in summer weather have appropriate safety items such as umbrella, sunglasses, water, salt, chips or crackers, hat, baby wipes, sunscreen, electrical or duct tape, face mask, jacket, cell phone, medications, etc.
